Industrial & Food Grade Ammonium Bicarbonate CHANGHONG
Ammonium bicarbonate is a white compound, referred to as ammonium carbonate, with a chemical formula of NH4HCO3. It is in the form of granules, plates or columns, has an ammonia smell, and is a chemically unstable substance that is easily decomposed into ammonia, water and carbon dioxide by heat. The molecular weight is 79.055, and the theoretical nitrogen content is 17.72%. Ammonium bicarbonate is a carbonate, so it must not be placed together with acid, because acid will react with ammonium bicarbonate to generate carbon dioxide, causing the ammonium bicarbonate to deteriorate.

Development History
Ammonium bicarbonate in China
Around 1920, it was discovered that ammonium bicarbonate could be produced by reacting ammonia and carbon dioxide in coke oven gas. Some people tried to use it as nitrogen fertilizer, but failed. For a long time, only a small amount was produced, mainly used as a foaming agent in the food industry. In 1957, engineers and technicians of Dalian Chemical Plant produced ammonium bicarbonate by reacting lime kiln gas with ammonia. In 1958, China urgently needed to develop the fertilizer industry, and chemical expert Hou Debang successfully developed a new process for producing ammonium bicarbonate. Its characteristic is that the production of ammonium bicarbonate is combined with the purification process of synthetic ammonia raw gas (removal of carbon dioxide), which is called the process of producing ammonium bicarbonate by the carbonization process, thereby simplifying the process, reducing energy consumption and reducing costs. Through the improvement of the physical properties of ammonium bicarbonate and the continuous improvement of fertilization technology, it has achieved rapid development in China. In the early 1980s, its output accounted for more than half of China’s total nitrogen fertilizer output.

Product Details
Ammonium bicarbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce ammonium chloride, water and carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide can promote plant photosynthesis and increase vegetable yields, while the ammonium chloride produced can be used again as fertilizer.

Stable at room temperature and pressure, avoid contact with oxides and strong acids, thermally unstable, decomposes at 60 ℃ for solids and 70 ℃ for aqueous solutions.
Its solubility in water is 14% (10 ℃), 17.4% (20 ℃), and 21.3% (30 ℃). Its aqueous solution is alkaline, and the pH value of 0.1 mol·L-1 solution is 7.8 at 25 ℃. The chemical properties of ammonium bicarbonate are unstable and it is easy to decompose when heated. When heated to about 60 ℃, it decomposes into white smoke composed of 21.5% NH3, 55.7% CO2, and 22.8% H2O. It can be decomposed by hot water, which is an endothermic reaction. When moisture is present at normal pressure, it begins to decompose slowly above 36 ℃ to produce ammonia, carbon dioxide, and water.
1. Carbon ammonium fertilizer is widely used, with obvious advantages such as fast effect, low price, economy, and no soil compaction: ammonium nitrogen does not need to be converted and can be directly used by plants; when coal is used as raw material to produce carbon ammonium, it emits more than 350 m3 less carbon dioxide than nitrogen fertilizers such as urea, and is an environmentally friendly nitrogen fertilizer. In addition to agricultural production, in order to make the best use of resources and avoid environmental pollution caused by burning straw, the use of ammonium bicarbonate effectively improves the utilization rate of reducing sugar and nitrogen after straw conversion and enzymatic hydrolysis, which is of great significance to the recycling of resources. Carbon ammonium used as fertilizer is generally colorless fine crystals, with a water content of less than 5% and a nitrogen content of about 17%. It consists of three components of ammonia (NH3), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water vapor (H2O) or four elements of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, all of which are necessary nutrients for plants. It is suitable for all kinds of soils, can provide ammonium nitrogen and carbon dioxide required for crop growth at the same time, can be used as base fertilizer, and can be used as topdressing, etc., and is welcomed by farmers. The annual usage accounts for about 1/4 of the total nitrogen fertilizer production, and it is the most widely used nitrogen fertilizer product in my country besides urea. The disadvantages of ammonium carbonate are that it is volatile and has a low nitrogen utilization rate. Therefore, in production, we should make the best use of its strengths and avoid its weaknesses, and use it reasonably;
2. It is used as an analytical reagent, and is also used for synthesizing ammonium salts and degreasing fabrics;
3. It can be completely decomposed after heating and can be used as a high-grade food fermentation agent. Ammonium bicarbonate replaces alum as a leavening agent, and it produces a large amount of gas when used together with sodium bicarbonate. It can be used as a raw material for leavening agents such as bread, biscuits, pancakes, and fried dough sticks, and is also used as a raw material for foaming powdered juice. It is also used for blanching green vegetables, bamboo shoots, etc., as well as medicines and reagents;
4. In the pharmaceutical industry, when ammonium bicarbonate is added to 10-hydroxycamptothecin (HPCT), the distribution ratio of HPCT droplets (particles) with LDPPS (porous powder) characteristics is 51.6%, which is much higher than the 7%-25% ratio in ordinary powder inhalers, improving the atomization and deposition of DPIS (dry powder inhaler), prolonging the retention time of drugs in the lungs, and improving the efficacy of HPCT for lung cancer.
5. Used as a buffer; aerator.
6. Ammonium bicarbonate is widely used in plastic and rubber industries, pottery making, chrome tanning and synthetic catalysts.
7. Ammonium bicarbonate is a relatively cheap precipitant, which is often used to purify rare earth carbonates from rare earth ores, and ammonium bicarbonate is used as a precipitant in industry to prepare rare earth oxides.
8. In terms of ecological governance, first of all, ammonium bicarbonate can be used as the draw liquid of membrane permeation technology. Compared with other types of draw liquid, it has the characteristics of high interception rate, low toxicity, low energy consumption, low pollution, and good performance. The pollutant interception rate after treatment is above 98%. It has high practical significance. Secondly, ammonium bicarbonate has the ability to enhance the activity of heavy metals. Using ammonium bicarbonate as a regulator can significantly improve the purification of polluted soil by plants without causing the destruction of soil structure, the decline of internal biological activity, and the loss of soil nutrients. Finally, ammonium bicarbonate can be decomposed into non-ionic ammonia, providing nitrogen for the growth of algae such as Gracilaria, promoting the photosynthesis of algae, and increasing production. Compared with other control agents, ammonium bicarbonate has the advantages of low price and reduced environmental pollution, and is suitable for the control of marine polluting organisms.
It can be seen that ammonium bicarbonate is widely used and has a good market prospect. The production of its technological innovation product, long-acting ammonium carbonate, also represents the development direction of its new process technology.
